Open to all composers. Competitors for all of the four prizes were required to pay an entrance fee of 10s 6d. All problems were considered the property of the Committee of Management, and could not be published without permission.

Löwenthal clarified (or tried to clarify) the entrance fee requirement in The Era (1861-08-18) in response to a reader question:
With regard to the entrance fees, we should state that the non-payment of the fee of 10s 6d. will not exclude a competitor or deprive him of his honorary award, although of course he will no not be entitled to receive a prize.
It is not clear if the difference between receiving an award and receiving a prize affected any tourney reports. Although no mention of non-paying award-winners has been seen, the summary in The Era is expressed in terms of prizes, not awards.
16 sets were received, with a total of 144 problems. (One set contained 28 problems.)
No separate report of the Bristol congress or the problem tourney has been found. The prize winners are reported in the BCA 1862 congress book, but there is little or no additional material.
Problem 3 in the Prize 4 set was corrected by J. Kling as The Era, v. 24, i. 1230 (1862-04-20), p. 4, prb. 405 (corr. bRa8 → d7), which is occasionally printed without indication that it is a correction.
